Today we’d like to introduce you to Yeakun Yoo.

Yeakun began his studies at the age of ten in violin. He has always enjoyed humming melodies and playing instruments in his lifetime. He also played guitar and piano in his church. At the age of fifteen, He got interested in music composition. He decided to take a composition private lesson and found his talent in composition. He won several composition competitions in Korea and finally got in Seoul National University, which is the top 1 university in Korea.

He built valuable experiences and reputations in Seoul National University by performing his great pieces with professional performers. Yeakun was hired as an orchestrator in the military orchestra. He arranged and composed more than 30 pieces for the orchestra and conducted his pieces as well. After that, he worked at J music production studio for two years as an assistant composer, composing more than 30 projects of films, games, commercials, and K-drama music. At age 28, he decided to study in the US because he wanted to study more about film scoring and to broaden his musical perspective. Now, he is studying screen scoring at the University of Southern California and working with many talented filmmakers and game developers.

Yeakun has composed music for videogames, films, animations, commercials. One of his masterpieces is a Maplestory videogame trailer, which has been viewed by one million people on Youtube. He has an extraordinary composing skills in hybrid orchestral videogame music. In addition, he worked on several successful K-drama projects such as Miss-Ma, My love from the star, and Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim. He has composed all genres of music and has been regarded as a versatile composer.

Now, he has beautiful wife and two years old daughter. They always have been his musical motivation. They are the reason why he can still have a passion to be a more successful composer. He is still trying hard to be a good father, a good husband, and a good composer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I was in university, everyone was better than me. Whenever I was compared to others in the class, I felt like giving up as a composer. So I spent almost 10 hours studying music every day. Finally, I was able to graduate as a top student in the end. Since I wasn’t a talkative person, I often struggled with having a meeting with clients. Sometimes I didn’t understand what they are saying, so I’ve answered half-heartedly and did many mistakes. I didn’t ask them many questions, so they thought I had no interest in their projects. Through trial and error, I learned a lot of experiences. Many people gave me useful advice about having a meeting with clients and I read tons of books about communication. That made me a much better person.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

I can summarize my life in three ways, Videogame, Music, and sports. I’m a big fan of video games and I also enjoy listening to video game trailers. Not only making music for games, but also I’ve made all kinds of game sound effects and character voices. Especially as I directed many famous voice actors for recording game character voices, I became more affectionate about game sound. Their voices were so impressive and I was so honored to be able to work with them and edit their voices. I like film and animation music, but I will try to be a more creative and unique game music composer in the future.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’ve always been raised in a happy family. I think I remember the most when I sang a song with my family or played basketball with my father. I often played computer games like most teenagers but I enjoyed practicing guitar and violin when I was alone.
